The Tradition. Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a beautiful and culturally rich tradition with a history that dates back over 3000 years when rituals were conducted to honor the dead in Mesoamerica. Those that celebrate Día de Los Muertos believe that on that day the souls of the dead awaken and return to the living world to feast, drink, dance and play music with their loved ones. In turn, the living family members treat the deceased as honored guests in their celebrations and leave the deceased’s favorite foods and other offerings at gravesites or on the ofrendas built in their homes.
Fort Worth. In Fort Worth, Hispanic organizations and civic groups have held Día de Los Muertos processions, festivals, and galas within their communities for nearly 20 years. Día de Los Muertos en Fort Worth is a collaborative effort to expand those celebrations into a larger celebration for the whole city to enjoy. The Inaugural Día de Los Muertos en Fort Worth Parade & Festival will intentionally create space for those who want to learn more and experience our beloved tradition. The event is a unifying effort by the Artes de La Rosa Cultural Center of the Arts, the Fort Worth Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Worth Chapter of the National Latino Law Enforcement Organization, Visita Fort Worth and the Office of Fort Worth District 2 City Councilman Carlos Flores. Día de Los Muertos en Fort Worth will include a Día de Los Muertos themed parade that leads into an arts and culture festival held in Marine Park.
